The Baltic Sea Day launched by the John Nurminen Foundation takes place every year on the last Thursday of August with various events and activities. The goal of the day is to inspire people to enjoy our unique home sea and to do concrete things and give pledges for it. In addition to the celebrations, the idea of the Baltic Sea Day is to increase knowledge about the diverse nature, culture and history of the Baltic Sea.
The Baltic Sea is a key part of Finnish life. It provides joy and well-being to many, and also employment to seaports. The Baltic Sea is shallow and has a low salt content, which makes it particularly vulnerable. Nutrients ending up in the sea, loss of marine biodiversity and climate change further exacerbate eutrophication.
The Baltic Sea Action Group (BSAG) has launched a new way of contributing to the protection of our sea: tickets to the Baltic Sea. We are used to buying tickets to indoor swimming pools or ferries, for example, and these ticket revenues are used to take care of the infrastructure and enable continued services. The Baltic Sea also offers amazing experiences. The Port of HaminaKotka wants to promote the well-being of the Baltic Sea and support the work done for it, and has purchased entrance tickets to the Baltic Sea for its personnel. Some of our personnel took advantage of the ticket in honour of Baltic Sea Day by taking a dip in the sea!
